Top 10 Student Bars in Leeds

Leeds is well known in the country for having one of the best nights out, especially for students, and this is due to the huge array of bars and scenes it has on offer. Whether it’s for a classy cocktail, a sloppy stein of beer or some good old cheap shots, Leeds bars know how to put on a good show. We’ve compiled a list of our favourites, so make sure you check them out! 

1.       The Joint

The Joint is one of the most unique places to eat and drink in the city. The converted church boasts neon lights reflecting off huge the church windows, quirky interiors including urban art and spray paint, chairs made of bin barrels and the best American burgers in town.

2.       The Maven

One of the most secret bars in Leeds, the Mavern on Call Lane is a prohibition style speakeasy. Each of the cocktails it serves are intricately designed, garnished with flowers or served in a cup and saucer, and its speciality ‘The English Garden’ for two, features Hendricks Gin and comes served in a tea pot. With no signs or directions and its staircase hidden behind closed doors, it is a perfect hideaway, a decadent den, but remember to keep it to yourself!

3.       The Alchemist

‘Trinity’ was the first Alchemist to be created outside of Manchester. Famous for its laboratory style cocktails featuring smoke and unique apparatus such as Bunsen burners with flames, it also boasts a wraparound heated terrace bar that is perfect for all weathers, overlooking the city centre. The Alchemist is open from coffee in the morning until late at night and has an exciting food menu, so is a great venue for all occasions.

4.       Trio

This Headingly venue comes split into three sections, the ground floor is a restaurant, with its vast windows, boasting a feast of different local produce. The upstairs bar is perfect for an after dinner drink, serving classic cocktails injected with a Trio twist and the basement bar finishes off the Trio offering a stylish location for drinks later into the night.

5.       Blind Tyga

Leed’s answer to London cocktail bars is Blind Tyga, a place famous for its curious concoctions. Its lounge vibes, featuring cosy booths and comfy chairs, along with unique (both in taste and look) cocktails makes it a chilled yet special place to go – an ideal date location. There’s a different cocktail for all tastes and moods and as they also offer cocktail master classes, it’s a great place for a private party.

6.       Smokestack

Smokestack is a speakeasy style Bar with live music that plays late into the night. Bringing the essence of New Orleans into the centre of Leeds, the music style is funk, soul, blues and jazz and the extensive and carefully chosen cocktail list are southern inspired. Smokestack also offers cocktail masterclasses and free party hire, so is a great location for students to hold events.

7.       Tiger Tiger

With themed bars, drink deals and crowds of people, Tiger Tiger is the place to be if you want to party. With no two rooms the same, Tiger Tiger has a bar for everyone, whether it be the Tiki themed Kanalao serving pacific cocktails, or the karaoke room, belting out some ballads, or the disco room, making some shapes on the dance floor. For those who want to sit down with a quiet drink, stay away, Tiger Tiger is a party paradise and a haven for students who want a good night out.

8.       Manahatta

Spread over two floors, in the style of a NYC Loft Space, Manahatta is always buzzing. It is the perfect place to go for drinking and dancing, with a mezzanine on the second floor overlooking the party downstairs and an expert mixologist behind the bar. Manahatta also serves delicious food, so is a great place to go for dinner and drinks knowing that later on, the music will get turned up and the dancing will start.

9.       The Liquorist

Found in the very heart of Leeds on Greek Street, The Liquorist is designed as the perfect place to let loose with a few drinks. Its creative cocktails and extensive beer and wine list make sure that there is a drink for everyone and the venue’s charming character, full of mismatched furniture and quirky ornaments, is friendly and inviting. The venue also offers a hearty food menu and is open until late.

10.       Fab Café

Fab Café is the world’s first Cult TV and Movie themed bar. Opened in 1998 it describes itself as ‘the ultimate antidote to the mainstream’ and with a Fab Café in both Manchester and Leeds, it continues to be the venue at the heart of the alternative music scene. With regular events, members only themed parties, and special guests from the world of television and movies, the Fab Café is the place to be.
