When should I sort student accommodation for next year?

If you’ve started thinking about where you should live next year, you have probably also thought about when you should start looking for student accommodation. With different people signing at different times, it can always be hard to tell whether you are ahead of the game or behind. The truth is, there isn’t one set time that works for everyone. The time you start looking for accommodation tends to depend on a range of factors, such as your year of study, city, budget and the type of accommodation you are looking for. Some plan early for peace of mind, but others wait for everything to fall into place.

What should I consider before looking for student accommodation?

Before you start searching for student accommodation, it is worth taking the time to figure out what you want. Rushing into viewings can be a waste of time and make the process much more stressful than it needs to be.

Firstly, who am I living with? Do I want to live with anyone? Make sure you are comfortable with the friends you have decided to house share with. This is especially important for those going into second year as it is likely you have only known people a couple of months.

Secondly, location. Decide whether being close to campus is a priority or whether you are willing to live further away to save a bit of money.

Thirdly, you should consider the type of accommodation you are looking for. Whether it is halls, a shared house, flat or studio housing, knowing what you are aiming for can help narrow down your search.

Finally, your budget. Make sure you and your friends agree on a budget you can all afford, this can make conversations a lot less awkward further down the line.

Be realistic on what you are willing to compromise on, it is very rare that you will find a place that ticks all your boxes, but work out what points are important to you for your future student home You can learn more about finding your perfect crib here.

When to apply for student accommodation?

Knowing the best time to apply next year’s accommodation can often feel confusing, especially when everyone around you seems to be doing things at different times.

First Years

If you are starting university next year, you usually don’t need to start looking straight away. Most universities only open applications for halls of residence after they have sent out offers in March/April. You’ll be guided through how to apply on the university website. Deadlines can vary but it is important to make sure you apply early as they tend to give out rooms on a first come first serve basis.

It is good idea to research your options so that you can understand the different types of rooms available and the blocks closest to where you are going to be studying. If you are struggling to decide what you should take with you in your first year, read our blog on what to take to halls.

Second and Third Years

If you are a returning student, you will likely look to secure your university house much earlier, usually in November/December. Most students will begin looking at the start of the autumn term around the end of October. However, if you are a larger group of friends, you may want to start looking earlier.

That said, looking early doesn’t mean you have to commit early. Starting your search early gives you and your friends a variety of options to choose from. This can be particularly useful if you are looking for cheap student living. If you are making that transition from university halls to a student housing, find out more here.

Factors that affect timing

  • Location: Popular student areas tend to fill out faster.
  • Group Size: Larger groups usually need to start earlier.
  • Budget: Options with a balance of comfort and affordability can go quickly.
  • Type of Accommodation: Halls, Studios and Shared housing often follow different timelines.

When is it too late to apply for student accommodation?

The answer is, it’s never too late. Even if it feels like everyone else has sorted where they are living for next year, there are almost always options available. Accommodation doesn’t disappear, plans change, people drop out and groups fall through leading to rooms becoming available throughout the year.

If you feel like you have left it too late, do not panic! As long as you are flexible with location, budget and type of accommodation then you will have plenty of options available.

What should I do after I find my house

Once you have found the place you are happy with, it can be tempting rush straight into signing the contract. Before you do that, make sure you understand what  is set out in the contract. Look at how long the tenancy lasts, when the rent payments are due, what bills are included and how maintenance issues will be solved.

If you are moving in with friends, make sure everyone is on the same page on payment dates and responsibilities. You also want to double check your personal and guarantor details are all correct before signing. Once everything is signed, keep a copy of your contract saved so that you can refer to it at any point during the tenancy.
