Where To Live In Newcastle As A Student

The lively city of Newcastle with its two thriving universities, boasts beauty and fun all within a few miles. This amazing city has plenty of places where students tend to make themselves at home, but we know that it can be a daunting decision on which area to eventually end up in. Thankfully, due to the huge student population, wherever you will end up will be near to plenty of other students as well as what Newcastle has its reputation for.

We have put together a short guide to illustrate the best areas where all the students flock to as well as all the relevant information.

Jesmond – This is probably the most popular area of Newcastle. Known for its views onto the Jesmond Dene and also its close proximity to both universities. It is a 25 minute walk to Newcastle University or a 5 minute metro. The area has a mixture of students and family homes but also complimented with a overabundance of bars and restaurants. Houses here are a little more expensive but compared to the UK average it is still very cheap. A Tesco Metro and a Little Waitrose will serve all your needs on your door step as well as The Blue Bell, which will be your local.

Heaton  – Heaton is situated to the East of the City centre, surrounding Heaton Park. It is further away from both universities, which is reflected in the lower rent prices, but the easy Metro and bus links make it simple to jump into the centre quickly. Chillingham Road is the place to be for social life, you will find that many students live in the grid like roads just off this main road, making it a quick walk to other students living nearby. More convenient for the Newcastle students rather than Northumbria. This area has an excess of cheap student pubs and bars and eateries like The Chillingham, accompanied by the famous The Butterfly Cabinet and the delicious Naked Deli.

Newcastle City Centre – Living in the city centre is always ideal if you like the short walk to lectures and the hustling lifestyle of the busy streets and nightlife, which Newcastle is renowned for. The centre boasts the best of both worlds with an excess of high street shops and vintage stores as well as the tranquil Leazes Park and the famous Quayside for a much needed break from working. Rent is usually higher here due to all the amenities on your doorstep, but definitely worth it for all that is offered.

Fenham and Arthurs Hill – Situated west of the Newcastle central campus this is a more residential area with less to do for students. However, it is still filled with all the students desirables such as an Iceland and many cheap and cheerful take away shops. The distance to the centre is a little more than the other areas, which is represented in the rent prices although it is more spacious, with larger green areas such as the Hunters Moor to relax in between lectures. This area has many more larger terraced houses, ideal for big groups of friends that want to live near each other.

Sandyford – This area is located halfway between the City centre and Jesmond, only a 10 minute walk to the centre. This area is mainly residential and so is perfect for students that like to escape the party lifestyle that is Newcastle but are still in close proximity for when Friday night comes back around. Northumbria students will find this area more convenient and more popular in their university, albeit Newcastle students do not leave it off their list either. This area is more spacious but still never far away from buzzing and quirky bars such as As You Like It and Mr Lynch
